The Cage, which is situated in St Osyth, was used as a prison to hold people accused of witchcraft in the 16th century. The prison is well known for the imprisonment of Ursula Kemp and other women who were accused of witchcraft and hung in 1582. Ursula Kemp was born in St Osyth, Essex. She was a cunning woman who was frequently called upon by her neighbours to heal various ailments and sicknesses. She was later blamed for intentionally causing illness and death, eventually being tried for witchcraft at Chelmsford in February 1582. At her trial, several of her neighbours testified against her, making statements to Justice Brian Darcy. Along with her friend, Alice Newman, she was accused of causing the deaths of Edna Stratton, and two children, Joan Thurlow and Elizabeth Letherdale.
Ursula Kemp was hanged in Chelmsford in 1582. In 1921, the skeletons of two women were found in a St Osyth garden by Mr Charles Brooker, one of which was believed to be that of Kemp.
The current owner, Vanessa, purchased the house as she loved The Cage as a small child. She moved in with her friend. Within a month they noticed strange happenings, like taps turning on and off, TV tuning on and off and also electrical items not working. Vanessa has witnessed shooting stars within the living room, a drink can flying off the table, door latches moving and wardrobe doors started opening and closing. She has also had items go missing and later turn up in bizarre places.
Vanessa later moved out of The Cage as she had enough with all the strange activity. One of the last activities whilst Vanessa was still living at the property was when she saw a man standing at the top of the stairs in modern day clothes. The owner has attempted to rent out the property, but the tenants only stayed a few months. The Cage is extremely active with spirits of jailer, a young child, a suicide victim, and Ursula Kemp.
